10/12/2008 - Seventy Six Dogs Seized in Oxford

On Sunday, October 12, 2008 CCSPCA rescued 76 Pomeranians and 1 pit bull from an Oxford property. Carol Hedlund, Executive Director led a team of board members and staff in cooperation with the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department. The conditions of the house in which these dogs lived were “horrific.”

The dogs were brought to our shelter where they are receiving medical treatment and fresh food and water throughout the day. As they are evidence in the case against the owner, they will remain in our care for the time being.

The owner, Stephen Fong of Brooklyn, was arrested on Monday, October 13 and is charged with 76 counts of failure to provide for an impounded animal. Fong is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, October 20.

Thank you to everyone expressing concerns and asking how they can help. We are in great need of financial support to help with the rising costs of caring for these dogs. You can donate online by pressing the Please Donate link. Select Cruelty Fund from the pull down menu.

8/7/2008 - Ive´s Cream for the Animals!

The CCSPCA will be fundraising for the animals with sales of Ives’ Ice Cream at the 16th Annual Chenango Blues Festival on Saturday, August 16th. The CCSPCA will also be accepting donations for parking at the Festival on Friday August 15th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

According to Carol Hedlund, CCSPCA Executive Director “Thanks to the generosity of Katie & Alex Ives of Ives’ Cream, we are able to bring their delicious Ice Cream to local Summer time events while providing much needed donations for our animals. They have created a special SPCA flavor ‘Dog Gone Good Vanilla’.” Brandon Ives concocted the yummy vanilla ice cream with colorful sweet tart “bonz” and Gatlin Ives came up with the tasty treat’s name.
The CCSPCA and Ives’ Cream unveiled the new flavor in their lineup of delicious flavors at the Norwich Family Bluegrass Festival in July. The CCSPCA/Ives’ Cream booth was a hit among the festival attendees.

In addition to the Chenango Blues Festival at the Chenango County Fair Grounds, the pair will be at Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival on September 6th & 7th.

If you can’t wait for the Festivals to have an Ives’ Cream treat head on down to the Ives’ Cream Parlor at 10 S. Broad Street in Norwich.

9/27/2007 - A Celebration of 100 years

Chenango County SPCA celebrated its 100th anniversary and ‘unleashed’ its new Mary Elizabeth Macksey Humane Center with an open house on Thursday, September 27. Over 100 friends stopped in to see the latest improvements and visit with the shelter animals. P&C Foods of Norwich kindly donated all of the appetizers, desserts and drinks. Thank you P&C! Recognition was received from ASPCA, Town of Norwich, City of Norwich, Chenango County Chamber of Commerce and Thomas Libous’ office. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to everyone who made the open house possible as well as our supporters whom enable us to make the shelter a better place for the animals.

4/15/2007 - “LOVE” Through Walking

Carrie Furman, another one of our volunteers, has been volunteering since October 2005. Carrie actually helps the CCSPCA with her volunteer hours in two ways. First and most important is her devotion to our dogs. Carrie spends her free time on a weekly basis walking our dogs, usually on our nature trail behind the facility. The love and compassion she has for every one of them shows in her face as she takes each dog out of their kennel for a long walk. The eagerly awaiting dogs appreciate the fresh air and special attention. Carrie’s volunteer time also helps the shelter in another way. Beyond the one-on-one time, Carrie’s work touches the animals’ lives through her place of employment, Wal-mart. Wal-Mart makes a donation to non-profits where employees volunteer. The financial support we receive assists us in our care for the animals at the shelter. We are grateful to Wal-Mart for their initiative. Carrie goes above and beyond the hours that are required of her for the program. She also works actively to help us place the animals in their forever homes. The staff and especially the dogs love her and her devotion.

3/1/2007 - She Sees Through Their Eyes

Carolyn Walsh, one of our valued volunteers, has been volunteering since September 2005. Her role at the CCSPCA started by helping staff clean, playing with and socializing the cats. In the time she has been here she has provided stories for each and every cat that comes through our adoptive program. She is dedicated to all of them; the love she shares with them is obvious as she tells them stories because they gaze back into her eyes purring in contentment. Our cats can’t wait till she returns every week. Carolyn has taken her role to the next step by playing a big part in their adoption process. When she comes in she devotes her whole day to us and talks with our prospective adopters about the cat they are considering. Her familiarity with each cat has greatly aided in their adoption to new forever homes. Both the CCSPCA staff and especially the cats appreciate everything she does for us. She has a huge heart and a lot of love to offer our furry 4 legged friends.
